We launched a new campaign this week with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust called ‘Be A Hero’ which calls on Yorkshire residents to sign the organ donor register.

New shock figures shows a lack of Yorkshire organ donors, as 800 people in Yorkshire await lifesaving transplants and last year, just over 100 people in Yorkshire donated an organ after their death.

We are calling on residents to sign the NHS Organ Donor Register and become a hero and are urging workplaces and communities to support the campaign through anything from putting up a Be A Hero poster to hosting a superhero day. You can even download a #BeAHero mask from www.leedsth.nhs.uk/be-a-hero  and tweet your superhero selfies to @LTHTrust using the hashtag #BeAHero.

The ‘Be A Hero’ campaign aims to create a unique club of Yorkshire heroes, highlighting that you don’t have to be a superhero to save a life and boosting sign-ups to the register. The campaign will showcasing some of the heroic, lifesaving actions of donor families in our region. The launch day featured many brave stories from those affected by organ donation with support from the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post, as well as stories appearing on BBC Look North, ITV Calendar and radio stations across Yorkshire.

We are also organising two ‘Be A Hero’ launch events in Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre and Wakefield Trinity Walk where our very own James Hickman will be wearing the Superhero mascot morphsuit (did you spot the mascot around Leeds landmarks?).

With support from celebrities around the region, we hope that the campaign makes a real difference to the organ donation figures!
