Like everyone living in Leeds, I have nothing but good things to shout about Yorkshire’s beautiful city. My student life in Leeds has certainly gone above and beyond expectation over the past two years but, the arrival of June meant it was time for me to extend my experience in the city and get involved in a different part of Leeds life. There was no better place or time to join Hatch and set out on my working journey as the excitement of beginning my year’s work placement was paired with an exciting office move to Leeds Dock.

From day one at University, I was adamant that I was going to do a placement year and with Leeds being a place that I adore, Hatch was where I really wanted to be. With the world now plentiful of graduates and the popularity of apprenticeships on the rise, it was clear to me that doing a one-year placement before I went on to my final year at University, was the most valuable thing to do.

Nervously waiting after my application and interview, I was so soooo chuffed to become the newest egg at Hatch! Stepping into somewhat unknown territory, I was more than ready to experience a different side of life in the Knightsbridge of the North. Welcomed with smiles and sunshine bouncing off Leeds Dock into the glass front of the impressive new office, my first day was very much an accurate indication of what daily life would be like working at Hatch HQ.

I’ve been a devoted Hatchling for just under three months now and within the time I’ve been here so far, I already feel like I’ve not only gained buckets worth of industry experience, but also life experience. With this being my first full time job, beforehand I could only imagine what work was going to be like and what I was going to get from it. Now, I can undoubtedly say that I’ve already gained, seen and experienced soooo many more things from working here than I thought possible.
Throughout the application and interview process you see yourself as a future ‘placement student’, working at Hatch it has been obvious that my input, skills and knowledge are valued as an employee. There’s something that has to be said for the great team ethos and flat structure which allows everyone to be as creative, helpful and daring as the each and every hatchling around them.

I’ve realised that an agency is the place to go to get in the know about how the PR world works, especially at Hatch, as I’ve seen how social, events and sponsorship work too!
You can certainly call it fast paced, handling various requirements for a broad range of clients. From the word go I was thrown straight in to the mix – calling journalists; contributing to team brainstorms; going to client meetings; writing press releases, blog and website copy; helping organise events; writing contact and weekly reports along with analysing coverage; oh…and not forgetting the photo shoot done in my second week! I’ve really been able to recognise how theory learnt at university is applied practically and built my knowledge and skills in a working environment!

I would recommend for all students to get themselves out there and do a work placement if they have the opportunity to do so. Career choices can be overwhelming for everyone, especially for those just starting out, and doing work experience can make you realise what you love doing for a career. I have certainly done so, and I still have so much more to experience. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Hatch Family so far, and I’m excited for the rest of the year ahead – I’m sure I’ll come out a practitioner moulded by and hatched from the great energy, creativity and knowledge of my team mates. Here’s to a year of creativity, hard-work and fun!
