Massive congratulations are in order for our client The Wensleydale Creamery, who received some huge news this week, achieving Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for their famous Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese!
Receiving PGI status from the European Commission will ensure no other cheese-maker outside the designated area can produce a cheese and call it Yorkshire Wensleydale.
After applying for PGI in 2006, this long awaited decision has come as an early Christmas present for The Wensleydale Creamery, who will add the PGI symbol to their packaging to help differentiate their cheese from other Wensleydale cheeses on the market.
Yorkshire Wensleydale’s unique elements include its creamy, crumbly taste, which, combined with their multi-award winning status and reputation, helped them secure this international stamp of authenticity.
With the EU announcing this amazing news early, it was all hands on deck to let everyone know before Christmas, including the cheesemakers at The Creamery, who had the difficult task of moving the 1.6m celebratory cheese! We’re delighted with the amazing response to the announcement, with the UK press spreading the word and joining in the celebrations.
We hope everyone enjoys their Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese this Christmas, resting easy with the knowledge your festive cheese board is playing host to the authentic product.
